Improving Access to Palliative Care for People Experiencing Socioeconomic Inequities: Findings from a Community-Based Pilot Research Study

Individuals facing socioeconomic challenges often encounter barriers to accessing essential services, such as healthcare. A recent study by Salas (2023) and colleagues explored this issue by implementing a community-based palliative care nursing intervention for vulnerable individuals. This intervention was a collaboration between the research team and the Palliative Care Outreach Advocacy Team in Edmonton. The nursing intervention improved access to health services, helped to address the communities’ multiple needs and enhanced overall quality of life of those accessing the service. This research illuminates a crucial gap in the delivery of health services and highlights a potential intervention in promoting equitable access to palliative care for vulnerable individuals.
