Every year, about 26,000 hours of service are received by more than 1,800 palliative patients through volunteer visiting programs across Northeastern Ontario. Beyond a capture of the number of hours, the number of families and the number of volunteers, there has not been a way to measure the impact of this valuable work. Sharon Carstairs Order of Canada The Honourable Sharon Carstairs, Senator (retired), Senate of Canada is among 109 new inductees into the Order of Canada announced by Governor General David Johnston this week. She is receiving the honour for her work as a palliative care champion which includes her 2010 reportRaising the Bar: A Roadmap to the Future of Palliative Care in Canada. Rick Firth, HPCO’s President and CEO was on hand at Roger’s House In Ottawa when John Fraser, MPP for Ottawa South announced details of increased investments in hospice services across the province by $13.9 million over three years as part of a $75 million investment announced in the 2016 Spring Budget. The $13.9 million additional investment across the province will increase funding for existing hospice beds by $15,000 per adult bed and $22,400 per paediatric bed. Read More
